As four-time Tony winner Audra McDonald prepares for the January 12 opening of Porgy and Bess, Broadway.com asked readers which of McDonald's prior roles is their favorite. Choosing from an array of Broadway, film and TV performances, fans narrowed the diva’s repertoire down to three choice roles. Check out the results below!
1. Sarah (Ragtime) - 50%
McDonald captured the hearts' of theatergoers (and Tony voters!) as Sarah, the troubled lover of piano player Coalhouse Walker, in 1998's Ragtime. Starring opposite Marin Mazzie and Brian Stokes Mitchell, McDonald earned a Tony for Best Featured Actress for singing songs like “Your Daddy’s Son” and “Wheels of a Dream.”
2. Grace Farrell (Annie) - 11%
In the 1999 made-for-TV version of the classic musical Annie, McDonald took on the role of Oliver Warbucks’ sweet secretary, Grace Farrell. The cast also featured Broadway heavy hitters Kristen Chenoweth, Victor Garber and Alan Cumming.
3. Lizzie Curry (110 in the Shade) - 9%
In the 2007 Broadway revival co-starring John Cullum, McDonald played a woman who falls head over heels for a con man. McDonald garnered a Tony nomination for her portrayal of the sharp-tongued spinster and shared the stage with her new fiancé, Will Swenson.
